Trailer for Coming-of-Age Film ‘Manifest West’ with Tim Heidecker

“We make the rules now, all four of us. We’ll be a family of ‘Mountain Men’ in no time.” Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie off-the-grid thriller titled Manifest West, from filmmaker duo Joe Dietsch & Louie Gibson. The film is intriguing coming-of-age story told through the eyes of a young girl whose family spirals out of control after they decide to live off the grid. It had its world premiere at the Mammoth Film Festival, where it won Best Genre Film, earlier this year. The film stars Annet Mahendru, Milo Gibson, Lexy Kolker, Michael Cudlitz, and the comedian Tim Heidecker (giving a very serious performance this time). This starts out so nice and uplifting, the story of a family trying to make a life on their own in the woods – reminds me of Captain Fantastic. But then things quickly get intense and twisted and dark, which isn’t so nice and fun anymore. Don’t …

It originally premiered at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival last year, and also played at the London and Chicago Film Festivals, among many others in 2021. Set over the course of a tense day at an isolated boarding school, this moral drama follows a boy’s desperate fight to save his sick friend in the face of a rigid bureaucracy. By the time the adults in charge finally understand the seriousness of Memo’s condition and try to get him to a hospital, the remote school has been buried under a sudden, heavy snowfall. Starring Samet Yildiz as Yusuf and Nurullah Alaca as Memo. This looks like it has some impressive cinematography telling a heartbreaking, frustrating story about how …

Starring Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn in the lead roles, with appearances by Danny Ramirez, Benny Safdie, and John C. Reilly. This is a sensual erotic thriller, but it’s as empty as any dusty old bottle lying in the street.

First Trailer for Frederick Wiseman’s ‘A Couple’ with Nathalie Boutefeu

“Your power crushed my life and my personality as well.” Film Forum in NYC has revealed a trailer for the first narrative film from acclaimed doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. It’s called A Couple, also known as just Un Couple in French, and it’s not really a film – a 63 minute chamber piece. A Couple follows a long term relationship between a man and a woman. The man is Leo Tolstoy. The woman is his wife, Sophia. It’s nothing more than an hour of a woman reading letters and dairies written by Sophia, his young wife, who he didn’t seem to love. French actress Nathalie Boutefeu portrays Sophia as a “determined, loving, angry woman who recognizes the limitations of long-term marriage to a man of world-renown.” Which is to say that she didn’t really understand that she was married to someone who didn’t really care about her. It premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where I ranked it as …

Cannes Best Actress Winner – Full US Trailer for ‘Holy Spider’ Thriller

“I did it all for God… I’m not finished yet.” Now that’s scary. Utopia has revealed the official US trailer for an acclaimed, award-winning indie film made in Iran titled Holy Spider, which originally premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It won Best Actress there for star Zar Amir Ebrahimi – who really is tremendous in this one. It’s the next film from an Iranian-Danish filmmaker named Ali Abbasi, who earned acclaim for his excellent Swedish troll film Border. This film is about a journalist who travels deep into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so called “Spider Killer”, who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners. Based on a true story, which is especially freaky. Holy Spider stars Zar Amir Ebrahimi and Mehdi Bajestani. I wrote in my Cannes review: “it’s brutally realistic, unflinching look at murder in modern …

Lean into that connection.” Nova Vento Ent. has unveiled an official trailer for an indie true story film titled The Year of the Dog, which is not a documentary but a feature based on real events. The film is made by Rob Grabow, who sold his condo and put everything into making this. He spent years in Alaska, working around and meeting people, including a dogsled musher who was having a difficult journey with alcoholism and addiction, who credited his sobriety in large part to one of his dogs; a high-spirited Alaskan husky. Second Trailer for Psychedelic Thriller ‘All Jacked Up & Full of Worms’

“Wanna do worms with us?!” Strap in for something extra crazy. Cinedigm has debuted a full-length official trailer for an indie psychedelic horror creation called All Jacked Up and Full of Worms. We featured a teaser during the summer just before the film’s premiere at Fantasia. It’s also playing at Fantastic Fest this weekend before arriving on Screambox for streaming this November. Two strangers bond over eating (and making) addictive, hallucinogenic worms leading them on a psychotic bender full of murder and perversity through the back alleys of Chicago. Fantasia’s description: “Shot in the midst of the pandemic, a tiny-budget flick with vastly creative design and a twisted story, Alex Phillips’ debut feature is possibly the greatest earthworm-junkie-horror flick in history of earthworm-junkie-horror cinema.” This stars Phillip Andre Botello, Betsey Brown, Trevor Dawkins, and Eva Fellows. The more they show from this, the weirder and weirder it looks!! I like the quote in here about the theater being raided because …

Wild First Look Teaser for ‘Kids vs. Aliens’ Premiering at Fantastic Fest

“We should have a party.” Oh yesss, here we go!! From the filmmaker behind Treevenge and Hobo with a Shotgun comes Kids vs. Aliens, his latest wild and crazy indie horror project. From Canadian filmmaker Jason Eisener comes this new sci-fi epic – an all-time rager of a teen house party turns to terror when aliens attack, forcing two warring siblings to band together to survive the night. While it sounds similar to Attack the Block, it looks entirely different. Starring Dominic Mariche, Phoebe Rex, Calem MacDonald, Asher Grayson Percival, and Ben Tector. Premiering at Fantastic Fest and Sitges, they add: “Utilizing elements from Spielberg and Donner’s templates, Eisener crafts a nostalgic homage to timeless childhood favorites like The Goonies and Monster Squad, but spices them up with foul-mouthed dialogue and gallons of gore.” I’m so down for this!! Barely 30 seconds of footage in this teaser, but I’m sold already!! Fire it up.
